Poker Sit and Go

What is a Sit & Go?

A Sit & Go is a single table tournament, or STT for short, typically with 6, 8, 9 or 10 seater tables. The objective is to win the tournament by being the last remaining player. Each player buys into the STT for a fixed amount plus a small rake commission for the cardroom. The rake is normally around 10% of the buyin, so a $10 tournament would mean $1 rake.

The STT will start as soon as enough players have registered to fill all the seats at the table. At a 10 seater table the top 3 players get paid using a 50% / 30% / 20% payout structure; if 10 players each contribute $20, the prize pool is $200 and the payouts for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place are $100, $60 and $40 respectively.

Sit & Go's use an increasing blind structure that typically increases either every 10 minutes or after 10 hands. As the blinds continue to increase the level of play becomes more aggressive and players get knocked out at a faster rate, eventually leaving three players who are considered 'in the money' to battle for 1st place.

We recommend poker sit and go at Ladbrokes Poker. On some tables they pay out five places!

STT's are one of the most popular forms of poker and provide an excellent learning opportunity to anyone interested in sharpening up their multi table tournament endgame.

Types of Sit & Go

Sit & Go's come in a number of varieties and are played using many different forms of poker. By far the most popular is Texas Holdem, followed by Omaha and 7 Card Stud; No limit, Fixed Limit and Pot Limit versions are available at most online cardrooms. The two most common sizes of STT are 6 and 10 player games, although the term Sit & Go has now been loosened to include two table 20 person games which are becoming more popular.

Although there are many different format Sit & Go's on offer at the various online cardrooms, the most common are 10 seater No Limit Texas Holdem tournaments. They normally use either a standard blind structure or a turbo blind structure where the blinds increase at a much quicker rate.

Steps or ladders are an interesting addition to the Sit & Go family; reaching the prize money in a small stakes STT earns you a token for the next level and you keep earning tokens until you have reached the top level, usually level 5 where a big payday awaits for the top 5 players.

STT's also provide a cheap opportunity to gain entry into a bigger multi table tournament via a 'satellite' tournament, typically where only the winner progresses through to the MTT by winning the satellite.
