Casino

Act

To bet, call, fold, raise or check when it is your turn to make a decision.

Action

An opportunity to act arises when the "action is on you". Also used to describe the betting and raising that has already occured during a hand/game. Thirdly, used to describe a players willingness to gamble, they "give you action" if they are prepared to gamble with you.

Active

A player who is still competing for a pot is active, all other players who have folded are inactive.

Add on

A one time only opportunity to buy additional chips within a tournament, normally at the very end of the rebuy period. All players are afforded this opportunity and it costs the same as a rebuy.

Advertise

To show your cards after the completion of a hand or to intentionally get caught bluffing in order to create an inaccurate table image for yourself, hoping your opponents will play more loosely / tightly against you in the process.

Aggressive

A style of play mostly comprised of regular betting and raising.

Ahead

Acting before other players. You are ahead of players to your left, players to your right are ahead of you.

All in

Committing all your remaining chips or money to a pot by betting/raising/calling all in.

All-in disconnect

Many online poker sites offer a provision to protect players who suffer a loss of Internet connection during the middle of a hand. The player is considered to be all in for whatever amount they had contributed to the pot before losing connectivity. In such cases, a sidepot is created for all remaining active players, the All-in disconnected player cannot win this sidepot.

Alligator Blood

A fearless opponent who is capable of playing well under severe pressure.

American airlines

A pair of aces in the hole.

Angle

Originally used to describe a technically legal but unethical play used to gain an unfair advantage over an opponent, such as deliberately miscalling the value of a hand. Normally, any player is allowed to make one such mistake without fear of severe punishment, but for cases where continuous manipulation of the rules occurs, the player involved will be punished by having his hand killed and possibly be asked to leave the casino. Nowadays, the term angle is also used to describe a fair and ethical advantage gained over another player, such as player note taking.

Ante

A small mandatory bet that is contributed by all players at the table on every hand; typically used in the later stages of a multi table tournament.

Aquarium

A poker site or table that is comprised mostly of fish.

ATM

A bad player who generates cash for his opponents through their own bad play.

Avatar

An image used to represent a person in an online poker game.

Baby

A low-ranked card, usually five or less.

Back alley mugging

A type of bluff; a scare card falls on the turn or river and you make a big bet bluffing your opponent out of the pot.

Backdoor

A hand that is made by catching cards on both the turn and river to complete a 3 card flush or straight draw.

Backraise

A backraise is either a reraise from a played that had originally limped in, or a minimum raise to avoid facing a larger raise.

Bad beat

A poker hand where the loser was a big mathematical favourite at the point when the money went into the pot, but got outdrawn on the turn and/or the river.

Badugi

Badugi is a triple draw four card low-hand wins poker variant.

Bankroll

The total amount of money available to a player for financing poker.

Behind

Having the worst hand before the last card has been dealt.

Belly buster

An inside straight draw, also called a gutshot.

Bet

The opening bet in a round of betting.

Bicycle

The lowest possible straight, made up of A2345 and not suited.

Big bet

The larger of the 2 bets in a fixed limit game, usually double the size of the small bet.

Big blind

The larger of the 2 forced pre flop bets, posted before any cards have been dealt.

Big slick

A nickname for Pocket Ace/King hole cards.

Blank

A community card that looks to have no value i.e. it has'nt improved any active players hand.

Blinds

Typically consisting of a small blind and a big blind, the blinds are mandatory bets added to the pot before each hand to ensure there is a financial incentive for at least a few players at the table to see a flop.

Blocker

Where an opponents holds one of your outs in their hand, they are said to hold a blocker; by holding one of your outs, they are blocking the chances of you making your hand.

Bluff

Betting and showing strength with a weaker hand than your opponents, attempting to make them fold the best hand.

Board

The community cards dealt face up that are shared by all players.

Boat

A nickname for a full house .

Book

The art of player notetaking; to have book on someone is to have player notes on them. Book can be in the written form or mental form. Also, book can be a three card draw.

Bot

Short for robot, a bot is a piece of automated software that plays poker. Although they are currently legal to use, it is considered unethical and breaks the terms and conditions of poker sites.

Bounty

A special cash prize awarded to a player for knocking another specified player out of a tournament.

Bottom pair

Making a pair with the lowest rank card on the board.

Bricks & Mortar

A real life offline cardroom such as in a casino.

Broadway

An unsuited ace high straight.

Brush

A person empoloyed by the casino to round up players waiting to play poker, they will organise the table waiting lists, make announcements of open seats and also brush the table in between games.

Bubble

The last exiting position in a tournament before entering the prize money.

Bullet

An ace.

Bully

A player who frequently makes large bets and raises.

Bum deal

A misdeal.

Burn card

A card dealt from the top of a deck face down and discarded on each round of betting in order deter card marking.

Busted

Losing all your chips or money.

Busted hand

A drawing hand that misses the draw by the river.

Button

a round small plastic disk used to signify a theoretical dealer.

Buyin

The cost of a tournament entry fee or the money required to play in a particular game.
