Deepstack Play Poker Strategy
Deepstack play involves much more poker psychology and multiple level thinking than playing with a shortstack or even a medium sized stack. You have more options in deepstack play than any other, because of the large amount of chips infront of you. You have many options, it is unecessary to commit yourself to any pot unless you have a very good hand in favourable circumstances, you can choose to play a lot tighter or a lot more creatively, you are also able to use more high level concepts because of your deep chip situation.
Multiple level thinking takes on a more important role, you have enough chips remaining to ask meaningful questions via making bets on every round of betting, this means you are furnished with plenty of information about how good your hand is and also your opponents. Because you and your opponent share more information about each others holdings, the opportunity to outhink your opponents is much bigger.
Implied odds take on a more important role too; there are typically so many chips behind each player that it's worth factoring that into your thinking moreso. Pot odds, while still important, play less of a role in deepstack play, implied odds are used instead because the real goal of deepstack play is'nt to win small pots, it's to win your opponents entire stack.
Your starting hands selection changes drastically with deepstack mentality, choosing to play only the best hands is'nt important anymore, your mindset should be to choose hands which have the potential to win you a lot of chips, ideally your opponents entire stack. Being a deepstack, you have the ability to play more patiently, especially if playing in a tournament such as the World Series Of Poker Main Event, but online cardrooms host only a small percentage of tournaments that are truly deepstacked, thus there is more scope to play deepstack poker in ring games.
